The Doomsday Clock Is Dangerously Close To Cold War Era Threats
« on: January 28, 2017, 03:24:10 PM »
Humanity is at great danger in the present times where human rights are violated at the drop of a hat.

Further, nations are building warfare arsenals, whether atomic or cyber, to claim strategic advantage over one another.

The gene-editing tool CRISPR would make some kinds of biological weapons easier to produce, especially for countries or syndicates who could not afford university-quality scientific labs.

Human lives are considered inferior to state's propaganda, howsoever insignificant and improbable it may be.

Inequality of income has increased to such an extent that threats of riots and civil wars are very much visible.

Civil liberties protection in cyberspace have also diminished to the lowest possible levels. We are living in an age of digital panopticon whose sole purpose to indulge in illegal spying and e-surveillance upon national and international netizens. Countries like US are openly supporting transborder hacking activities by their law enforcement agencies with great disregard to sovereignty of other nations.

It is natural that the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists recently announced that the Doomsday Clock now stands at two-and-a-half minutes to midnight. This means that the existential threats now pose a greater danger to humanity than they have at any time since the height of the Cold War.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic warning about how close the world stands to “midnight,” that is, nuclear or existential catastrophe. Since 1947, the Bulletin’s scientists and security experts have updated it annually.

A report has urged that “Wise public officials should act immediately, guiding humanity away from the brink. If they do not, wise citizens must step forward and lead the way”.
